J. Michael Lazarus, M.D., Sr. Executive Vice President, FMCNA

J. Michael Lazarus MD is Senior Executive Vice President of Fresenius Medical Care North America and Director of the FMCNA PSO. Dr Lazarus stepped down as Chief Medical Officer of FMCNA in January 2010 after having served in that role for 13 years. As former Chief Medical Officer of the nation’s largest provider of dialysis services, Dr. Lazarus was responsible for the continuous improvement of care and results of FMCNA’s dialysis patients at the company’s more than 1,800 dialysis facilities.

Dr. Lazarus graduated with honors from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, earning a Bachelor of Science degree from their School of Pharmacy. He received his medical degree with honors from Tulane University’s School of Medicine. Dr. Lazarus completed his medical internship at Emory University-Grady Hospital in Atlanta, his internal medicine residency at Tulane University-Charity Hospital in New Orleans, and his nephrology fellowship at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital-Harvard Medical School in Boston.

Over the last 40 years, Dr. Lazarus was the recipient of multiple grants and worked extensively in the field of nephrologic research, specifically clinical research in ESRD care. In addition to his research, Dr. Lazarus had an extensive clinical practice primarily at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, one of the leading hospitals in the United States, as well as consultation privileges at numerous community hospitals and dialysis centers in the Boston area. Dr. Lazarus was Director of Dialysis Services from 1973-1989 and Director of Clinical Services for the Nephrology Division at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital from 1989-1996 and a senior physician at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital from 1979-2002. Dr. Lazarus has been an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School since 1979 and is a member of the Nephrology Division of the Massachusetts General Hospital. He is an Adjunct Professor of Medicine at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine.

Dr. Lazarus is widely published on a broad variety of topics relating to end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and its treatment. Dr. Lazarus has been consultant to various CMS committees involved with ESRD. He has lectured nationally and internationally on topics related to renal failure and its treatment. He has served on the editorial boards of leading medical journals including the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, Current Opinion in Nephrology and Hypertension, Advances in Renal Replacement Therapy, and Seminars in Dialysis.
