Accountable Care Organizations (ACO)
With the enactment of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and the release of the rules governing ACO’s by CMS, the stage has been set for the next major paradigm shift in the delivery of healthcare in the United States.
FHP is at the forefront in partnering with nephrologists to develop responsible systems to meet the renal (ESRD & CKD) needs of ACO’s in communities across the country. We believe strongly that ACO’s are a key tool in healthcare reform. However, if history repeats itself, ACO’s will not be able to deliver real reform unless there is a viable and realistic model for the delivery of care. “Managed Care” was believed to be the solution in the 1980’s, but it never fulfilled the promise of reform as it lacked a key element. It did a great job in managing cost but never actually managed care. Likewise, ACO’s have great promise but will not live up to their potential if the underlying delivery system does not change.
FHP established a model for delivery reform with our partner nephrologists in the recently completed CMS ESRD Demo. The model focused on creating a Health Home for renal care. The health home in renal care can provide the essential delivery tool to allow ACO’s to fulfill their promise. We welcome the opportunity to partner with nephrologists to provide a viable solution to ACO’s.
